REIGNING champion Paul Moss failed to register a class win on the final weekend of Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship action but successfully defended his title. However it was a traumatic weekend for several Teesside drivers in the two-day Darlington and District MC-organised meeting at Croft. Darlington driver Moss (Citroen Saxo) went into the final two rounds in pole position to collect his third NSSCC crown. His second place in class D behind Peter Dixon (Honda Civic) on Saturday was enough to complete the job.
And that was just as well for Moss, since he went of at Clervaux on Sunday and was forced out of the race with suspension problems. Yarm’s Bill Addison (Caterham) was one of six drivers who went into the weekend with a mathematical chance of overhauling Moss at the top of the leaderboard. But he missed Saturday’s action after son Martin borrowed his car... and was involved in an almighty crash in the Scottish Saloon and Sports Car race. He emerged with a sore neck but was eager to get back on track. So he and Addison Snr spent all day rebuilding the car in time for Sunday’s action. Addison Snr had qualified on pole for both NSSCC races and led Sunday’s round until two laps from the end when he was hit by an electrical problem, related to the crash damage, though he still finished third. The problem was put right for Addison Jnr’s race and he stormed from the back of the grid to cross the line fourth.
Mark Campbell of Yarm had a big crash on Saturday when the centre of one of his wheels came out. However he worked hard to repair the car and was rewarded with overall victory on Sunday.
Hartlepool’s Darren Flounders made a welcome return to action in his new Ford Fiesta which he hadn’t driven until Saturday morning. Clutch problems prompted his retirement from both races but he remained encouraged. “The car felt great handling- wise,” he said, “I just need to get used to driving it. “All in all I’m very pleased with it despite the problem we had.”
The biggest cheer of the weekend was reserved for Jeff Wilson in the Scottish Sports and Saloons. The DDMC stalwart missed qualifying due to an electric fault on his new Lotus but, despite starting from the back of the grid, carved his way through the field and trounced the opposition.
REIGNING champion Paul Moss can wrap up his third Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship title this weekend. The Darlington driver has been leading the way for most of the season and is favourite to hang on to his crown. But, as ever, the popular Darlington and District MC-organised series has been closely contested and the title goes down to the wire at this weekend’s Croft double header.
A podium finish for Citroen Saxo driver Moss will assure him of the title, but incredibly no fewer than FIVE other drivers remain capable of taking the title if he slips up. Yarm’s Bill Addison (Caterham) - in his first year of NSSCC racing - is one of them. Making a welcome return to NSSCC action is Hartlepool’s Darren Flounders. It will be his first meeting in two years after work on building his new class C two-litre Ford Fiesta Mark III took longer than expected. He’ll have a mad dash too. After finishing work in Wales in Friday afternoon, he’ll hot foot it up to Scotland to collect the car then drive straight to Croft on Saturday morning. That means that, apart from putting it on the trailer, Saturday’s qualifying session will be the first time he has driven it.
DEFENDING champion Paul Moss dropped his first points of the season - but is on course to retain his Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship crown. The Citroen Saxo driver finished third on the road behind guest Simon Mayne (Fisher Fury) and class D rival Peter Dixon (Honda Civic) in race one at Cadwell Park. And although Mayne again took the chequered flag next time out, Moss turned the table on Dixon.
With two rounds left - at Croft next month - Moss now has one hand on the trophy. Yarm’s Bill Addison missed the meeting as he was helping son Martin in the Brands Hatch pits. And the plan worked - for Addison Jnr won his first Caterham Roadsport B Championship race. He took the chequered flag after swapping places several times with series leader Lee Wiggins. He was also second - to Wiggins - next time out to move him right back up the championship leaderboard. Addison Snr also took the opportunity to race - and he too took a win and a second place.
THE fascinating battle for Northern Saloon and Sports Car Championship honours resumes at Croft this weekend. After four rounds, reigning champion Paul Moss from Darlington (Citroen Saxo) is at the top of the leaderboard with four wins out of four - but Yorkshireman Mike Cutt (BMW M3) is tied with him on 92 points. A gaggle of other drivers are close behind, however, including Yarm’s class A2 leader Bill Addison (Caterham) and Fiesta driver Mick Starkey from Seaton Carew. Mark Campbell from Yarm has also started the season in flying form, taking class wins from the first three rounds before missing the last one.
